What is a Clean Salon?
Clean beauty is often talked about, but not always clearly defined. To us, it simply means choosing products made without ingredients known or suspected to negatively impact human health — and creating a space where you never have to choose between results and wellbeing.

At Purely Sonoma, clean beauty is about care in every sense. We use thoughtfully selected products that are safe, effective, and free from ingredients associated with hormone disruption, cancer risk, or unnecessary irritation. We also consider the bigger picture — prioritizing ethically sourced, cruelty-free, and non-animal-derived ingredients whenever possible, along with renewable and biodegradable materials that are kinder to the environment. Every ingredient should serve a real purpose.
But clean should still feel indulgent. We believe beauty should be luxurious, high-performing, and confidence-boosting — whether it’s your everyday haircare, glowing skincare, or a finishing touch that makes you feel your best. With today’s advancements, there’s no need to compromise —
you can have results, experience, and peace of mind all at once.
Before & After
F.A.Q’s
-
Transparent ingredient lists: Brands clearly list all ingredients using common names, not vague terms like "fragrance" or "active blend."
Avoidance of known harmful chemicals: Clean products exclude ingredients linked to health or environmental concerns (examples below).
Safer alternatives: Clean brands use safer, well-researched substitutes that deliver the same benefits (plant-derived surfactants, naturally derived preservatives, biodegradable emulsifiers).
Minimal, thoughtful formulations: Fewer, purposeful ingredients that do the job without unnecessary additives.
Responsible sourcing & manufacturing: Ethically sourced botanicals, cruelty-free testing, lower-waste packaging, and reduced carbon footprint.
Third-party standards or testing: Certifications, clean beauty lists, or lab testing for contaminants add credibility.
-
Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butyl-, ethyl-): linked to hormone disruption.
Phthalates (often hidden in "fragrance"): linked to reproductive and developmental concerns.
Formaldehyde-releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15): potential carcinogens and sensitizers.
Sulfates in aggressive concentrations (SLS, SLES): can strip hair/skin and irritate.
Triclosan and triclocarban: antimicrobial chemicals with environmental persistence.
Synthetic fragrances and unnecessary allergens: often obscured and can cause irritation.
PEGs and certain silicones when contaminated or non-biodegradable.
Oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens (reef-impacting).
-
Haircare: shampoos, conditioners, styling products formulated without harsh sulfates, unnecessary silicones, and questionable preservatives.
Skin care: cleansers, serums, moisturizers with non-irritating actives, responsible preservatives, and clear labeling.
Makeup: pigmented, long-wear formulas using safer pigments, binders, and preservatives.
Body care: deodorants, lotions, and washes that avoid aluminum salts, harsh fragrances, and harmful antimicrobials.
-
Read full ingredient lists; prefer familiar, pronounceable names.
Look for reputable certifications or third-party testing where possible.
Research brands’ transparency about sourcing, testing, and packaging.
Patch-test new products.
Prioritize products based on exposure: daily-use items (deodorant, moisturizer, lipstick) matter most!
-
"Natural" equals "clean"
Not always. Natural ingredients can be allergenic or environmentally harmful; clean focuses on safety, transparency, and sustainability, not just origin.Clean means less effective
Modern clean formulations can be technologically advanced and perform as well or better than conventional products.Clean is regulated
There's no single universal legal definition; standards vary by brand, certifier, and region. Vet companies on transparency and science. -
